Some people like to dive first and think later, and others like to plan out as much as possible —because they are over-thinkers and over-planners— and then dive in. I’m the latter.
My whole game plan for math is divided up in phases. Phase 1 is middle school math. Yes, I have been starting over with arithmetic and order of operations, that sort of thing — there is no shame in starting from the basics in anything! My daily math session for Phase 1 consists of: review, math drills, a math lecture, math practice, then followed by review math drills.
The review part is a quick 5-10 minute review of what I learned the previous day.
The 60-question math drills are for both fun and to instil pattern recognition. I find completing them to be almost soothing in nature. And it doesn’t hurt that I can make my pages colorful! Who said math drills have to be in boring black and white?
The lectures are from Youtube, specifically Professor Leonard’s math lectures. I have tried many math videos on YouTube and I like his the most. He is very, very good at explaining math concepts in a way that isn’t intimidating. And he breaks concepts up into small parts and not only explains how to do things, but why. I find knowing the “why” behind the action really solidifies my understanding of the material. I practice alongside the videos, but I don’t complete one video per day because some of the videos take me 45 minutes to go through and others take over an hour. I am so grateful for his videos. I only wish there were textbooks that accompany his lectures!
After the videos I’ll do one or two pages of math problems that were covered in the video lecture that day. I do this by finding math problems online to complete.
Then I end the session with more math drills, usually of review math. The math drills don’t take up too much of my time and they are a great way to end my session.
So there you have it! That is my daily math routine. Not too much, not too little. I really like it because I can cover a lot in a few hours. I am still in the early brainstorming stages of figuring out when to add in self-made quizzes and tests, but for now I think I’m on the right track!
Mathfully yours,
math girl
